T-Mobile USA today announced a significant expansion of its direct carrier billing service that now ranges across online purchases of digital games, gaming and social networking credits, music, videos, and other digital content. T-Mobile said that customers will be able to use their T-Mobile account number to pay for online goods and services when they are purchased from within the browser of their T-Mobile device. The cost of that product will then be added to their monthly bill. T-Mobile is partnering with a number of mobile payment companies, including BilltoMobile, Boku, OpenMarket, Payfone, and Zong, to make this system work. T-Mobile noted that a number of online merchants have signed up to support carrier billing, and the number of mobile payment systems and merchants is likely to increase over time. According to T-Mobile, both it and its financial partners will monitor transactions to prevent fraudulent charges. The service goes live later this month and is free to use. Customers may opt out if they so wish.
