HTC provided more information via its Facebook page on how owners of HTC phones can unlock the bootloader of their device. HTC explained that it will continue to ship its Android-based smartphones with the bootloader locked for security reasons, but they will support user-initiated unlocking. HTC said that it will make a tool available via its web site that can be used to unlock the bootloaders of its devices. In order to access this tool, HTC device owners will need to register with HTC and accept HTC's terms, which note that unlocking the bootloader may void all or parts of the warranty on the device. The process then involves connecting the phone to a PC so that HTC can send an unlock key to the device. Unlocking the bootloader allows owners to install custom software builds and make other modifications that aren't possible with stock software.
