AT&T Updating Voicemail Security, Requiring Passwords

AT&T is introducing a new change to how it handles customer voicemail in order to make it more secure. Starting today, new customers, customers who change their number, customers who create a new inbox, or customers who upgrade to visual voicemail will need to set a password in order to retrieve their voicemail. The default behavior of the system will force customers to use their password each time they check their voicemail (currently, customers don't have to). After an initial password is set, customers can choose to opt out of the security feature, though AT&T suggests that customers don't for their own protection. The Wall Street Journal reports that the change is being made in light of the recent voicemail hacking scandal in the U.K.
