The Wall Street Journal today reported that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission is focusing its antitrust investigation of Google on its policies related to Android and Google search. In particular, the FTC wants to know if Google is preventing its handset manufacturer partners from adopting the services and/or software of Google's competitors. Citing sources "familiar with the matter", the Journal also suggests that the FTC is concerned that Google uses information generated by its rivals to improve the placement of its own services in search results. The FTC initially indicated that it would explore Google's business practices in June, though at the time it didn't specify what part of Google's business it was interested in. In a response sent to the Journal, Google indicated that it feels the investigation was brought on because other companies feel threatened by its success as it pushes into new businesses.
