Verizon 'Discussing' LTE Roaming with Overseas Partners
Sep 2, 2011, 9:57 AM by Eric M. Zeman
In an interview with AllThingsD, Verizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer David Small said that the company believes the wireless industry will "come together" and eventually enable Long Term Evolution devices to roam across different networks. "I think the ecosystem will certainly converge at the appropriate time," Small said. Small also indicated that Verizon Wireless has already broached the topic with its overseas partners Vodafone and China Mobile. "We've had a fair amount of dialogue," he said. In the U.S., Verizon Wireless's LTE network operates in the upper 700MHz band and AT&T's LTE network will operate on the lower 700MHz band when it launches later this year. Right now, AT&T LTE devices will not be able to roam onto Verizon's LTE network and vice versa due to the spectrum support difference. European carriers, such as Vodafone, are deploying LTE in other spectrum bands, including 2600MHz. It is possible that Verizon will add support for these others bands so that its LTE 4G customers can access LTE 4G services when roaming abroad. Verizon Wireless has not formally announced any such plans, however.
