Microsoft today announced in a blog post that it expects to start distributing Windows Phone 7.5 Mango to existing WP7 devices "in the next week or two." Microsoft cautioned, however, that because each individual WP7 handset has its own carrier-installed software on board, that the update may not reach all handsets for several weeks. Microsoft says that users should avoid installing WP7.5 builds that come from any entity other than Microsoft, or the carrier and/or the manufacturer of the device in question. It explains, "This firmware has been painstakingly tuned so your phone—and apps—work with all the new features of Windows Phone 7.5. Since your phone requires the proper firmware to function as designed, [our] advice is simple: steer clear of bootleg updates and homebrew tools." Microsoft said it will update its "Where's My Software Update?" tool so that WP7 device owners can get a general idea of when to expect their update to become available for their device.
