Adobe today announced that it has agreed to acquire Nitobi Software for an undisclosed sum. Nitobi makes two phone software developer products, called PhoneGap and PhoneGap Build. These tools are open source platforms that developers can use to build HTML5 and JavaScript-based applications that work across platforms such as Android, iOS, BlackBerry and other operating systems. Adobe believes that this purchase will allow it to offer developers two avenues for writing applications: Its own Flash and AIR products, and the HTML5 and JavaScript PhoneGap and PhoneGap Build products. Nitobi is based in Vancouver, and its employees will become Adobe employees. The companies expect the acquisition to close by the end of October, pending government review.
