Justice Dept. Eying Up Verizon's Spectrum Plans
Dec 20, 2011, 2:36 PM by Eric M. Zeman
The Department of Justice has confirmed it is examining Verizon Wireless's plans to purchase spectrum from several cable companies for antitrust reasons. Earlier this month, Verizon announced that it agreed to purchase 122 Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum licenses covering 259 million POPs for $3.6 billion from SpectrumCo. SpectrumCo is a joint venture between Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks. The Justice Department will scrutinize Verizon's AWS plans to see if they violate antitrust issues and place too much power in the hands of a single company, according to a person familiar with the government's plans. The government is also going to look into the reseller agreements Verizon has with the cable companies in question.
