Microsoft has filed a lawsuit with the European Commission against Motorola, claiming that the company is not offering licenses to standard essential patents at fair and reasonable rates. Microsoft is specifically calling out the licensing fees Motorola wants for 50 patents related to H.264 mobile video playback, which Microsoft claims are 1,000 times higher than the patent fees Microsoft pays to other vendors for similar licenses. Microsoft wants the EU to investigate Motorola's patent licensing practices for standard essential patents. Apple filed a similar lawsuit against Motorola with the EU last week.
