That and if you have a shared data plan, why pay the $20 bux extra per month, cost of the device and 2 year contract when you can just use your smartphone as a mifi? Maybe not as good, maybe power issues but wtf, buy an extra power charger.

I honestly don't understand it, either, certainly not from the user's perspective. My favorite MiFi was the tiny one with an e-ink display (always on, using zero battery.) Since then, they've only added silly features, while keeping the user interface...
