Without lowering the plan price, you are being double charged for the handset. ..
Some are not understanding that the price plan has built into it the cost that allows vz (or att) to subsidize the handset costs..But if the phone isnt being subsidized, the plan should be cheaper (just like tmo's value plans are cheaper than its classic plans). So customers who take advantage of this program are really being double charged for the handsets, since the price plan cost remains the same.
The cell carriers don't want to be in the phone subsidy business. They would much rather the customer bring their phone or pay full cost for one so that they don't have to use the revenue from the plans to recoup the money from the phone subsidy. If ...

The phone subsidy is based on you having the contract for 24 months. They have to be able to resell the phone after 6 months, they cant sell it for full price, so they have to cut their losses some...

And....that other 1/4 of the retail price of the phone is essentially your "upgrade" fee for being able to get a new phone at the 6 month mark. Not exactly better than AT&T's plan. I agree, the service plan should decrease in price with this program.
I think a little bit too much is made of Edge. The only people that probably will use this program is phone addicts. whith that being said an addict will never pay the full payment for ONE phone using this program. they will trade it in at some point....

Verizon's Edge is similar to AT&T's Next plan except for two things.
1) Instead of your monthly installments being spread over 20 months, Verizon's Edge requires they are spread over 24.
2) Verizon allows you to upgrade every six months, instead of a year but you still have to pay for half of the phone and RETURN IT back to Verizon.
