The UMA service is simply the actual 'switch' from cellular to Wifi, right? you'd still have to pay Vonage, or Skype, or whoever, right?
if this is supposed to fix tmo's coverage issues, it's more of a band-aid to the surgery it needs. it's innovative that they are offering the service, but it seems like a better way of conserving anytime minutes and side-stepping ma bell than fixing coverage issues

No, you would not have to use vonage or packet8 (packet 8 is much better quality) at all. You would just need to have a internet connections.

Watch for it this year under the brand "T-Mobile @ home." I hear that they are partnering with Comcast for the VoIP service. Although the article mentioned the T-709, the new SDA and MDA should work with it as well. We'll see.

UMA Could End Roaming Fees???
With UMA on your cellphone and a UMA enabled wireless router, then wherever in the world you plug in your router you would be "in network" and not be subject to roaming. So you could go on business trip and save yourself huge overseas call fees and switch the sim when you want a local number with the country you are in. Sweet.
It doesn't matter with Tmobile, they have no roaming charges to begin with.

just recently, as soon as verizon came out with EVDO, their TOS became reallly strict.. no cell evdo tethered useage.. no evdo router.. etc...
well... i routinely do VOIP Skype on my PPC internationally with EVDO.. so the big carriers.. t-mobile included... as soon as they get HSDPA and UPA out ...
