ATTN: captainplooky

I believe you are tending to miss the point.

All of your examples are fine and dandy, except for the fact that these are all things that have continued to happen before the said companies began to merge.

None of what you posted are exactly results of consolidation of companies, and remember, we are discussing the adverse affects of a merge between AT&T and Bellsouth, not just the faults of the telecommunications industry in general.

At any rate, the government will place certain conditions on the transaction of AT&T and Bellsouth just as they did with SBC and AT&T. Those conditions included price controls, providing competitors access to buildings, and providing customers with unrestricted access to the internet.

As a whole, thi...

So by all means, let us allow them to continue.

We are AT&T - You will be assimilated.

Wow - totaly 80's flashback.

I wonder how this will effect prices and technology innovation, since the breakup has been credited with lowering prices and stimulating innovation.

Considering how many of the telecom corporations have continued to make forays into privatizing the net with "fast lanes" and other positions related to development and consumer rights - I think in the long run this will just end up hurting the consumer.

Any wagers on when the next breakup will occur?
I would say more of a 50's flashback... The 80's broke this up and stimulated competition ie. lower prices, more choices and innovation. I hope this doesnt give us another "walmart is coming to town" situation.
Not any time soon.

Bellsouth and AT&T don't compete with each other anywhere in the US. Bellsouth provides local telephone service in 9 states and AT&T provides local telephone service in a seperate 13 states. Nowhere will the combined company be...

and here we go again... AT&T Wireless

So I wonder if it's true this time? Or is it another misunderstanding?

"Under the deal, the Cingular brand will be phased out in favor of the AT&T brand. The name will be familiar to wireless customers: AT&T Wireless Inc., a spin-off of AT&T, was acquired by Cingular in October 2004."

I believe its true. Ed Whitacre said that of the three brands AT&T, Bellsouth, and Cingular, the combined company would retain one name for all services to clear up confusion. That name would be AT&T.

I'm really going to hate explaining to current former ( 😕 ) AT&T Wireless customer that even though the name has changed back to AT&T Wireless that they still have to migrate over to AT&T Wireless, and that they can't keep their old AT&T Wireless pla...

at&t and cingular

from my understanding with selling cingular, they will be keeping everything running under the cingular name. as it said in the article, not much will be changing.

AT&T migrates to Cingular then to AT&T again?

Ok, so I've been selling cell phones for about a yr. now and I'm somewhat confused...

Right now all the AT&T customers must migrate to cingular if they want new phones or add lines and pick cingular plans because AT&T wireless doesn't exist...

So what happens to the "old" AT&T customers when the rebranding of cingular is changed to AT&T? Will the old AT&T customers have to migrate to the new AT&T? Will the old AT&T customers be able to keep their same plan?

I wonder how the re-merging of AT&T and cingular customers will work. Maybe both old AT&T customers and cingular customers will have to change everything over to whatever the new phones and plans are?

I think they should keep the rollover minutes. If they didn't.. They would b...

This is totally different from the AT&T Wireless integration. That was a complex merger of two separate companies.

This will simply be a re-branding. Same company, same everything - no "migration" - just a new name.

About the brand

1. Yes, the Cingular brand is going away. AT&T was pretty clear about that in their press release:

https://www.phonescoop.com/news/discuss.php?fm=m&ff= ... »

2. That doesn't mean the "AT&T Wireless" brand is necessarily coming back. They could call it "AT&T Mobile" or even just "AT&T".

branding?

petty as it may sound, my biggest 'worry' for lack of a better term is weather or not cingular wireless will retain its current name, or take the name at&t wireless. i'm hoping they keep the cingular name and here's why:

1. the old at&t wireless sucked. cingular has a better reputation.

2. jazzillions of dollars have already been spent switching the old at&t wireless branding to cingular, and the money it will take to switch back would, in my humble opinion, be better spent on new towers. in addition, third party retailers would prolly lose money on changing over their advertisements.

3. the at&t name exists outside of cingular wireless. the cingular name does not. therefore, if they keep the cingular name (or even better, somethin...

From the article:

At the completion of the deal, which is expected to close within a year, all the landline and wireless businesses will exist under the sole brand name of AT&T, the companies said.

My take is, they d...
