Operators From Both Sides To Cooperate For 4G

That is what this is really about. The operators have formed that group to basically get some influence over the standards process, which has been vendor driven and inefficient.
The operators are sending a message to the vendors: "cut the crap or we will."
Their intent is to influence standards groups. I have not heard of an intent to actually start their own tech.
They could, however, do the latter by commercializing an existing tech and the two front runners have to be 802.16e and FLASH-OFDM. The latter is owned by qualcomm and Q is trying to standardize it in the 802.20 group.

Will cellular surpass DSL/cable one day?
With such speeds, and such great mobile devices it wouldn't surprise me...

I've read of tests that networks (if they a ton of spectrum) can get over 100 Mbps connections... I don't remember which technology, but I remember it was on phonescoop.
my vote is NO...the landline providers will just keep upping their network speeds to stay ahead of wireless...i think verizon just released a router for their FiOS service cabale of 100Mbps...besides if the wireless connection is faster than the wirel...

i love motorola...especially the razr....its the best thing to ever happen to the cellular world....my razr is like my best friend....dependable..fun...and has some many good features.....

That seems like an unrealistic launch date
4 Years to completely revolutionize wireless? Seems really ambitious unless they are talking about the first commercial network being in Japan. I would honestly rather see 3G be worldwide before they start working on 4G! Also a standard of service for wireless data services would be nice. There's still very little reason to have data in the United States in terms of usable services.
2010 unrealistic for full scale 4G deployment? That's rediculous! I mean hey, we got ALL the analog towers turned off and ALL the 911 call centers e-911 compatible on time!!!

Oh man, if this means there's only be ONE standard worldwide (no more GSM or CDMA - just... umm... GSMDMA or something) that would be fantastic! Instead of having to swap out entire chipsets for different markets, you just tune the frequencies via software. Cool beans.

This should have been standardized years ago. Wireless services should be a commodity like telephones, rail roads, roads, running water, sewage, and electricity. They should all be built and created under the same standards and you should not be able ...

let skip right to 4g i am no longer excited about 3g and i don't even have it yet 4g where it at but something will screw 4g up hope i am alive to see 5g.

One 4G Device usable worldwide?
Does this mean that the 4G standard will mean that these devices can be carrier agnostic and as long as a carrier has 4G the device will work on it? Interoperatibilty and roaming will be much easier to implement this way.
don't forget that even if every carrier around the world manages to implement a single protocol (which this does not guarantee, but it does strongly encourage), that there are still a number of different bands for service. it is posiible, but i suspec...

WiMAX
The near term future is WiMAX (802.16e) which is almost everything a carrier will want. It is standards based, has super fast speeds, and has a foot print that is well suited for emerging markets like India and S. America. The one network, multiple device approach would allow your cell phone, high speed internet, and backhaul services to exist on one network. Intel is shipping every notebook computer it makes with WiMAX support built in starting next year. Moto and Samsung have already demoed working systems.
Sprint and Moto have already announced a trial this year. 4G is coming a lot sooner than 2010.
But it will be spectrum dependant. There will never be one frequency the world can agree on.
