Palm Reportedly Up for Sale
HTC + Palm = awesome.....But,
Given the fact that marketing has successfully pushed apps as a way or life, this has become more of an interest than the devices themselves. Palm severely lacks the support from developers.
The union of HTC and Palm's OS could in fact, be a device in which no others could defend themsves against. But I wonder about how the lack of apps would effect the interest.
I personally don't care how many apps I can shove into a phone, but it appears I may be a minority.

Companies that should buy Palm
Essentially, you've got an easy grab at a downright amazing OS that needs some hardware love and marketing muscle.
1) RIM - RIM needs a new OS badly or the Blackberry is going to die a very slow, long, painful death. It wouldn't be an easy transition, but it's their best shot.
2) Motorola - They already got screwed over with the Nexus One launch, and their attitude to Android is rather noncommittal. 3 months to push 2.1 to their flagship phone is laughable- they need the software expertise of Palm.
3) HP - HP has a phone division? I didn't know that, either. HP buying Palm would be a smart move as I don't see Windows 7 on the HP Slate being such a great experience- HP could use WebOS to differentiate their products. (I don't thin...

Virtually any manufacturer with a stagnant (i.e. RIM) OS would benefit greatly by picking up Palm. Here's the hitch though: is the Palm OS worth nearly $1 billion?

What do you mean when you said Moto's attitude toward Android is rather noncommittal, they've put out like what 5 Android smartphones already?

I don't think they'll do it, but it would make some sense for them to buy it. Not so much to replace android, but it would give them access to a HUGE patent arsenal
Too big to fail??
There are those in any business that claim they are too big to fail. They are only fooling themself. It matters little if you were the first on the block or the industry leader. If you do not listen to your customers or work to stay ahead, then you can and will become history!
It could be Apple, VZW or anyone. I do not feel that any company is with out the possibility of failure. You forget who made you number one, the customer with money, and you will join the ranks of simply an industry has been or trivia question.

Good Bye Palm
You had your chance. You were too little, too late. Nobody cares about webOS. The future of mobile devices belongs to Google and Apple. Even if HTC were to buy out Palm, they're way too busy with Android and Win7 to give it the time of time. Either way webOS is doomed. It was noble effort and now it's time to move on.
Pretty sure if HTC (assuming they're not as dumb as I've accused them of being) had a choice of selling phones with nothing but in-house WebOS and nothing but Android they'd dump Android in a heartbeat.

Well it is sad to say they are gone, but they have not been able to keep up even tho they were here at the beginning of the so called smart phones. The future is Android that is for sure, Apple will be there but Android is taking over.

Pump and Dump
Companies that are in trouble do this crap all the time. Radioshack just did it about a month ago. Speculation of sale almost always makes the stock price jump up, that way the bagholders can sell their shares at an artificially inflated price. It is also a good way to put the squeeze on the people who are shorting the stock.
I'm not buying this for sale crap. Companies in desperation mode will try just about anything - including creating false rumors about selling.
