This is Fake Skype- your calls are just routed over the air. This isn't real VOIP, so you can't make calls over WiFi.
Maybe it's because Verizon Wireless's data network isn't fast enough. I don't know. But this arrangement is why the HTC Evo and Nexus One can't do Skype either.

Skype will not be pushed to its full potential unless this exclusivity ends. Only VZW android phones will be able to get the gimped version of skype while every other android won't.

I get all of that.... those are the negatives, my point is there are a lot of positives to the consumer with (Verizon)this new feature added to there choices but you only ever rant about the negative. Yes there are those users that would like that.......
