CMOS Sensor from OmniVision Handles Simultaneous Video and Image Capture

I wonder how much of an improvement this CMOS would be in relationship to photo quality. 8MP means nothing to me since image sensors in cell phones are not capable of processing the image half as good as a D-SLR CMOS.

How this would be useful. I don't really see a purpose for wanting to capture video and pictures at the same time. Anyone have any insight into this?
