Samsung: We Are Not Charging Carriers for Android Updates
Updates not a core part of their business model
Android phone manufacturers have little incentive to update their software - their business model is based on selling hardware.
New apps not able to run on your old OS version? Samsung could not care less since it gets no cut of Market sales.
It should be no surprise that updates have not been a priority. Samsung's focus is on new devices - look at CES - and they are not responsible to consumers or developers to upgrade the software on existing devices.
This is the nature of Android itself: Google has no say in these updates except for its own Nexus devices.
tl;dr Don't hate the player, hate the game.

yeah i would agree with that. epic 4g, love the phone, would like to see gingerbread someday.
This wouldnt be an issue if Samsung didnt want to update their phones to Froyo or Gingerbread, so the problem is they have on multiple times claimed they would update their phones, sell them to people who believed them, and then NEVER update them and ...

Android is different than BB/iOS.
With BB and iOS, any App sales or good/bad press is directed at the OS company. They control all the phones with that OS.
With Android, Google makes the OS but it's up to the phone manufacturer to do the update...

It seems like there are a couple of users here that have their phones rooted. Just wanted to get some advice and opinions.
I am currently running my Captivate with Cognition 2.1.7 and I guess its ok. I am looking to get get a new ROM that runs Froyo and I have many questions:
- What are you guys currently running, how do you like it? What have you ran before and what
- How do I backup my apps cause I really dont want to lose them. Its just a pain to go back and download them again. I have Titanium backup and I though I would be able to back up my apps this way but cant figure out how to do it.
- When I flash a new ROM do I just run it straight from my phone, in other words, right on 'top' of my current Rom? Or should I go back t...

But Samsung, a multi-billion dollar corporation with nearly unlimited resources at it's disposal and TEAMS of software writers/developers cannot seem to upgrade a phone THEY made to a version of software designed specifically to be used on almost any size/shape mobile device?

its been so long
from what i know samsung first wanted to update it in november which was pushed to december and now its almost febuary sure if your not wanting to charge the carriers then what could take so long.. its been out since july stock with 2.1 thats 4-5 months

I'm starting to feel the same way. I wouldnt have rooted my phone if Samsung would have updated our phones.... oh well. What can do you?

Why are updates so slow?
Google released Gingerbread in December and it seems like most Androids are just now getting Froyo. What gives?
no one knows. maybe samsung is working on gingerbread without our knowledge. i dont think it has to do with bugs. the rooted versions have run perfectly as far as I can tell.

so my guess is that samsung fones will be getting 2.2 when all other phones have 2.3 . . .. i have an android samsung phone and it is pissing me off that i have 2.1 it blows

I myself will think twice about any Samsung product. To me this is just POOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT. Imagine if the phone had a serious bug, how long would it take for a patch ? Shame on you Samsung and the wifes new phone will either be an HTC or a motorola

Why is it that random developers have been able to get stable 2.2 roms developed for these phones and fix the gps over 3 months ago! Mean while samsung still cant pull it off????? 🤣
