Samsung: We Are Not Charging Carriers for Android Updates
Updates not a core part of their business model
New apps not able to run on your old OS version? Samsung could not care less since it gets no cut of Market sales.
It should be no surprise that updates have not been a priority. Samsung's focus is on new devices - look at CES - and they are not responsible to consumers or developers to upgrade the software on existing devices.
This is the nature of Android itself: Google has no say in these updates except for its own Nexus devices.

With BB and iOS, any App sales or good/bad press is directed at the OS company. They control all the phones with that OS.
With Android, Google makes the OS but it's up to the phone manufacturer to do the update...

I am currently running my Captivate with Cognition 2.1.7 and I guess its ok. I am looking to get get a new ROM that runs Froyo and I have many questions:
- What are you guys currently running, how do you like it? What have you ran before and what
- How do I backup my apps cause I really dont want to lose them. Its just a pain to go back and download them again. I have Titanium backup and I though I would be able to back up my apps this way but cant figure out how to do it.

All the complaining at the lack of updates and it's wait and be patient, it's coming (or screw you pal your behold II ain't getting 2.1) but now all of a sudden they chime in with a "we are not charging".

Why are updates so slow?
I'm not talking about downloading someone else's work either.
You have to consider that most manufacturers make their own User Interface. Just because Google pushed out Gingerbread... that doesn't "Smart Life"...
