NYC Lawmaker Proposes Pedestrian Ban on Cell Phones

Because if you're going to ban a cell phone or MP3 player because it causes the user to not hear what's around them, you need to protect the deaf, who have a more legitimate need for protection. Keep deaf people off the streets, as well as those who can't hear because of their MP3 player or cell phone.

And while we're at it, ban people who stop in front of other people walking. What dolts.

Propose a law that would require politicians to take aptitude and IQ tests before they are allowed to run for office.

As another commenter said "oh my God". Another Government elected official trying to help me. Please, I don't need your help! I don't need you to intrude into my life again Mr/s. city counsel-man, Mr/s. Congressman, Mr/s. State legislature! I've had enough government meddling in my life. Now you want to tell me when and where I can listen to music?

Its seems anymore our lives are full of those elected officials who are trying to help us, but really all they do is hinder us from our ability to enjoy our freedoms and rights.

Beware the elected official who though some seemingly benevolent purpose tries to deny you your right to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. Beware!

At this point, MOST people should be accustomed to ALMOST everyone having a cell phone. If you are gonna put your phone call/text in front of your life, let nature figure you out.

It's laws like these that make our society a bit more dumbed down. What happened to letting people figure things out for themselves?

If the person has not enough common-sense to know that being distracted while crossing a busy street puts them at risk, then let them be at fault and not the drivers in this case.
No ban is needed.
Use all the money that major urban cities pocket and put it towards highly visible signs at the "high risk" intersections. Make it totally clear through warnings and consequences of actions that create the dangers.
Then your "pedestrian" that is caught using a device (tons of security and traffic cams record it as well....hence they cannot deny they were not using it when the accident occurred).

we, as humans, have piss poor barometers for risk assesment on large systems. we have 1 incident where someone dies crossing the street while using a handheld device and some idiot politician thinks it's epidemic. do these guys do *any* kind of research on what the actual % of incidents there are due to handhelds? no, "if it saves ONE life it's worth it!" bullcrap. with that philosophy, we should all be federally mandated to live in giant plastic hamster balls and never leave the house.

I think this is a ploy to bring attention to the no cell while driving law. You could argue that since one is dangerous the other is just as dangerous. Or conversely if one is stupid the other is stupid.

The problem is, if you're driving and wreck you could take not only your own life but other's around you. If you're walking and you're too busy to pay attention to the 2000lb+ vehicle headed your way. That's your own fault.

Why not propose to build sidewalks above streets?? that way all cars would be under and no fatalities will occur.

You can't protect people from Darwin, nor should we...otherwise you end up with a society like in the movie Walle -- humans are overweight blimpoids that do nothing but eating and enjoy and are totally protect from themselves but also have zero drive to do anything productive.

This seems like a knee jerk reaction the the video of the lady walking into the fountain at the mall and it being posted on YouTube and her description of how embarassing it is for her now.
