MetroPCS, Service Plans, FCC, and 4G Video

Ran across another article about Metro vs. FCC - http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorial s/la-ed-metropcs-20110201,0,6422631.story

The news article being from the LATimes, I am unsure of its robust accuracy. Notwithstanding it brought to my attention some details which I had not read in previous articles on Metro's and Verizon's case with FCC.

I assumed that the new 4G service was basically unlimited 4G web. But if you look at http://www.metropcs.com/plans/ then it appears that only the $60 plan has unlimited 4G web. Yet with locked 4G access to only YouTube and the limited content on Metro's Video on Demand.

I have specific interests regarding if the new Net neutrality laws are designed to open this up to any streaming content...

From what I understand about the plan, you get unlimited browsing and unlimited streaming from Youtube on all 4G plans. The data cap is for other usage such as steaming from other sources. If you want unlimited everything, suck it up and buy the $60 plan. If you don't need it, why be forced into it?

As mentioned in the LA times article and posted at the Metropcs.com/plans you will notice that the 4G web "check mark" is only on the $60 plan. Metro has unlimited streaming on Youtube on all plans. However, on the $40 and $50 plans Youtube streams at 2G or between 28kb/s and 128 kb/s best-case-scenario.

The article mentions a block rather than a data cap pertaining to non-Youtube streaming sites at least with the $40 plan. With the $40 plan, a 4G phone will operate as a 2G. The point of the article was not sucking it up but rather that the promotional material was not making it clear of the limits. Furthermore, they block Skype and other services. Thus the issue is about being forthcoming and giving an accurate disclosure. Those that kno...

So with reguards to this limitation on video streaming outside of YouTube. What about Android apps that have videos, suchs as news apps, FOX NEWS, MSNBC, CNN, and there are quite of few other Android apps that have videos.

This billing cycle I used 6.5gb's with an LG Ally on Verizon. Would that be exceptable on Metro's 4G $60 rate plan?

Also, does Metro allow a period of time for me to evaluate whether or not I am satisfied when I'm a new customer?

Unfortunately you only get 30 days/60 minutes. That said, I don't believe they specify any amount of data in that 30 day period.

The $60 unlimited means unlimited and it means $60. There are no additional taxes and fees tied on. You can also stream any content you want on that plan.

I thought I heard one time that when you buy a new phone with Metro that you get your 1st month free, is that true?

It's been a couple of years since that 1st month free thing.

As a Metro user I can recommend their service without reservation.

I haven't bitten into that apple yet. I've used the Craft and presently have the Optimus M. The LTE speeds on the Craft were absolutely amazing. The lack of apps was not.

I have a good friend that uses the Indulge and has nothing but good things to say about it. I'm planning on going that route soon enough.

Do you think sometime in the next 8-10 months that there might be any chance of there being a follow up to the Indulge with a Super AMOLED display? Then it would be a real Galaxy smartphone.

I don't understand how Samsung calls the Indulge a Galaxy smartphone without having a Super AMOLED display. That is a big deal to me. I really want my next smartphone to have one of the nexgen displays.

If you save $30 per month, you can get a brand new, top of the line cell phone every 18 months and still be in better shape than with the big 4. It's my opinion that if you went Indulge you'd get more than 18 months of use out of it.

Right now I am researching. I was curious as to how fast Metro's LTE network really is, and so I checked out some reviews of the Indulge on the internet, and the speeds come in at 4mbps down, and 4mbps up, not blazing fast, but not bad.

I really, really want a smartphone with a nexgen display, Super AMOLED.

I am considering a move for between November and March.

Who knows what will happen between now and then. I know I don't care for big blue or big red. That's why business goes to Sprint and Metro.

I pay a whopping $140/mo to Big Red! ! ! If I were to get an LTE Android smartphone with Metro I would be paying $110 less a month. That's more $$$ that can go towards paying off my credit card & big screen tv.

I found that Verizon's network wasn't as advertised. It worked just fine for me most places but there's a spot by the airport that would drop like clockwork. Since I drove that route every day it was a deal breaker.

Right now my wife has Sprint for voice, we have a 4G MiFi device and I have Metro for voice for my personal line and the business lines. Both have done better for me than Verizon. I won't even get into AT&T.
