I recently go and motorola hollywood with amp'd mobile. I had to goto the next town to activate it, but it did get activated. Not the problem is In the town where I live I have 4-5 bars coverage at 1x and I can get crystal clear calls, However If I try to make a call it says it's calling and after about 10 sec it drops the call. Now I've called tech support at amp'd and they say "Well our system says you don't have coverage", but on their web site it tells me in the personal coverage area that I'm smack in the middle of the nation wide calling netowrk. also where I activated my phone has no coverage according to them, but I have full EV-DO coverage there.
