Why You May Not Want An iPhone

Forbes.com
Dan Frommer
6/11/2007

Give Steve Jobs credit: He's managed to get the entire tech community--and much of the rest of the world--talking about a pricey gadget that only a handful have seen or touched.

Apple's iPhone finally goes on sale June 29, and for many potential buyers, the only issue is whether they'll be able to get their hands on one, as it's certain to sell out immediately. But whether you are a music lover, a business e-mail addict, a mobile power-user or just a normal consumer, there are several good reasons to think twice about dropping $500 for the first-generation iPhone.

Will that be enough to slow iPhone sales after the initial rush? There are, after all, plenty of other...

interesting...most of this info has already been said though.

The debate will rage on, but I think its time to just sit back and wait for the phone to be released. Then start making judgements.

Verizon CEO weighs in:

Personally, I think he's BS-ing quite a bit. The iPhone, even if doesn't quite live up to the hype (and with EDGE, it prolly won't), will still change the industry a lot.

Other phone makers are going to have to get it together, software-wise, or get left behind; and all carriers are going to be putting more of an emphasis on their high-end phone lineups.

Everyone and their grandma will be trying to release touchscreen-UI phones, and everyone is going to try to improve internet user experience on their cellphones.

The iPhone, great or not, IS going to change a lot of things in the industry. Pretending it won't is silly (which seems to be everyone's ...

To me that would be like Toyota coming back out with the Supra. Also making it the fastest production car to date. But then stating you may only drive it on certain highways.

1st...why make something that is so data rich and only have EDGE?

2nd...Would Toyota rereleasing the Supra gain people buying Camry's or Corolla's (Toyota's main cars)

Apple's 2G Edge only deal is kinda goofy. They did it so that they can reach the most markets for AT&T (150+ I think) vs, the 20 to 30 of the 3G...Which would make sense except that you can make a 3G phone backwards capatable...and they exist in a multitude.

I do think this is Jobs' fundamental misunderstanding the the industry he is getting into. He is both very smart and very bullheaded. He made a very cool feature rich phone with grat tech advances in interface and software and then make it so that the largest group of possible user become uninterested be cause it does not have the business focus and product they high-end business user could want.

just more thoughts about this deal...been said though.

I think the EDGE/'no 3G' thing is due to other factors... like battery life (3G drains mucho juice, and the iPhone already has a very large, power-draining screen), perhaps cost, and maybe space used inside the phone (Apple likes to have the slimmest, sexiest products). They thought Wifi was gonna be an adequate stopgap, but it isn't quite. ☚ī¸

Funny thing is, they just posted firm battery life specs for the iPhone, and they're a lot better than anticipated. So they really could've gone HSDPA/EDGE on the thing, probably.

But this way, of course, they get to try to sell everyone a second iPhone once they make a 3G model. Instant obsolescence. Evil. đŸ‘ŋ

I agrees with ya's. It is funny that it was not 3G but is WiFi capable...Less drain and fewer spots to boot...drag that you have to have a data plan and if you hit a WiFi hotspot, may have to pay extra for that usage....

It's my gut feeling, and I could very well be wrong, but I think this may be the Delorean of cell phones....

I guess with all these discussions about the iPhone i can voice my opinion as well. I do have to say that Jobs is doing a hell of a job...hmmm...marketing the phone. The thing is alot of people, including myself, are already getting sick of the hype surrounding it. From coolness perspective the thing is amazing with the form factor, apps...however restricted... and OS functionality. From a wireless tech persective however i, with many other, do not understand some of the decisions...already overdiscussed. I find pricing ridiculous for the average user...ofcourse there will be Paris Hilton and her hoebag girlfriends that will buy it just to have it. There will be a large number of tech geeks just like us that have been saving for a while that...
