Simple esn switch, while its kinda frowned upon on our (verizons) end, because it will screw with our commission and numbers, it is a very simple process. esn is like the phones serial number for the towers. its just swaping the numbers on verizons end. take them both into any store, and they will charge you 10$ at most to swap the numbers.

My advice would be to upgrade via My Verizon. This is how I do it. If your wife's line is eligible and yours is not simply log into My Verizon and transfer your wife's upgrade to your line and then begin the upgrade process. This beats going into a store in so many ways. You do all the work and there is no rep to guilt you about the process being too difficult or blah, blah, blah. The problem with upgrading your wife's line and THEN switching ESNs is once you program your wife's phone the Sim card is locked to her line. Maybe the rep in store would have you sign the contract and never activate your wife's line on the iphone and simply do an ESN change. Who knows? It's too iffy. Come into one of my stores and i'll take care of the entire process for you with zero hassles and i high level of competency. Just because this guy has run into a couple of bad apples doesn't mean we all are.
You won't save a lick of money by upgrading an iPhone online and i've done this process hundreds of times with nary an error. Why risk screwing something up when you can get a trained professional to do it for you?

Can I ask you how as someone else at the store level? maybe you're direct and I'm indirect is the issue? If it were done as an alternate upgrade, or swapping the upgrade as the person above suggested, that would remove the unlimited data from the line receiving the phone.
As indirect if I upgrade the other line, and then do ESN changes I'll get charged back on the upgrade months down the road saying the line that upgraded immediately went back to their old equipment and Verizon assumes the new equipment was returned. I've fought it, and even though the upgrade date and contract dates remain extended I get no money.

I'm not 100% sure about the back end of things, i suspect it has something to do with our indirect agreement, but we have never been charged back from upgrading a line and then doing an ESN change. As far as it works on our end, as long as the contract dates remain the same and we don't process a return (i.e. calling COOS or doing that newfangled thing in eRoes) we get paid.

Yeah, that's what we do too. We had about 4 of them charged back earlier this year. They were all just under the 6 month chargeback period when we got charged back. The only difference was these were all cases where the person moved the equipment to a totally different account after the upgrade. We disputed it and were told sorry, nothing we can do.
If you notice in EROES when you do an ESN change right after an upgrade the system automatically puts the reason code as Worry Free Guarantee Return, and I guess that's how it shows up on their reporting. I questioned Christmas time when people are upgrading and removing the new equipment a lot and was told as long as the new equipment ends up back on the line we wouldn't have an issue.

I didnt' think about removing the phone from the account completely.
I wonder if the indirect portal for myverizon would be a better way to remove the phone from the account so the customer could do whatever they want with the device...

My bad! You will certainly lose your unlimited data plan if you do it the way I just outlined. Do it THIS way. I have personally done this. Okay. Upgrade your wife's line online still. It doesn't matter what type of phone she has....dumb smart whatever. Now... WHEN the phone arrives call the number to activate 8778074747 I believe and simply choose option two which accepts the contract terms but does NOT change the phone. Next download back up assistant to your existing handset. THEN, log into My Verizon and perform a device change from your current device to your wife's iphone. Dial *228 send and select option 1 and your are good to go.

So how did things work out? You did it correctly as I realized after my first post that upgrading on your line would lose your unlimited plan. Once your wife's phone arrived...calling that 8778074646 number and choosing option 2 to accept the contract terms but NOT change her phone to the iphone should have left you with a spanking new iphone to process a change of equipment through My Verizon.

It was a real troublesome experience. Apparently, the new Iphone has a software glitch in ios 6 that is creating headaches for some. I finally got it activated Saturday around lunch. I had to hook up to itunes, download ios 6.0.1 and then the phone finally activated properly, Thanks for all the advice

So by doing it this way, you WILL NOT lose your unlimited data?? If its ordered online as an upgrade, how do you not lose your unlimited data??

I am no expert, but as of now I am still showing umlimited on the new phone. The upgrade was done on another line and transferred to my line, which is how I was able to retain unlimited .

I've done it. Upgraded a dumb phone but never activated the equipment. I simply accepted the contract terms. I had a 4G handset just waiting to be activated.
