HAND

From time to time I get these "data calls." A number comes up on my phone display "answer data call" and I have no clue what it is. I called into Cingular to ask and the were as lost as I was. Anybody have this happen to them or know what it is. When I try and answer, it says...call can only be answered by data device, e.g. pc...or something like that.

It just sounds to me like some company has your cell phone on their fax spam list. Sadly, there's no way for you to tell unless the number shows in your missed call list. It wont show up on your detailed bill since you can't answer it.

Anybody know if HAND can call customer service after the call is made and have them look up the number?

Only if the number is public number, try yourself by going to www.anywho.com, then select reverse lookup

Yeah, I was going to suggest a reverse look-up after we know what the number is, but it sounds like nothing is coming through at all since it says "data call" (or something similar to that, I don't want to scroll back and look). There may be nothing to do if the originator of the phone call cannot be found. 😕

Prob is, if the call goes to voicemail or never goes thru, we don't get it reported in call detail... 🤭

just for west region customers (it may be the same elsewhere)

call customer care and have them remove the CSD date line on your account.

in the olden days accounts would have two forms of internet for the phone GPRS and CSD (circuit switched data, like dialup) if you still have the CSD feature code on your account then it has a number that tags along with it, someone is calling that number for whatever reason and you get the data call. if you have a GPRS enable phone you dont need this feature code in the first place other than a backup and it will charge you for minutes.

if you need CSD then they can remove and readd the feature essentially changing the data number associated with the feature.

What kind of phone do you have... With some phones, there is an option for next call answered, or all calls answered, to be voice/data/fax... different phones have that option to where you can change that and it should resolve the problem if you select all voice calls.

See if this works:

Goto Menu->Calls->Next Call-> and see if there is a priority option set and make sure that it is set on Voice Call... if that doesn't work, I don't have any other ideas

actually the reason that happens is usually related to a CSD data feature that is most likely added to your account. i would check with customer service and make sure you remove any circuit switch data feature especially since your phone is GPRS capable there hardly isnt a need anymore for CSD data.

It's not just you... that has happened to me too. I would get "Data Calls" sometimes 6-7 times a day from the same number... it was a local cingular number, so I called back and it sounded like some high school kid that answered the phone... the calls stopped shortly after that.

The reason why this is happening is because you have an CSD line active on your account. What happened is when they activated that CSD line it went in the the GFLEX system and because of that anytime someone calls that number it goes to your phone as a data call. To get this resolved you can have customer service remove the CSD line completly or they can have a member of tech support take it out of GFLEX so this wont happen anymore.
