Shortcut to personal NBI account?

seaddled

Jun 28, 2009, 12:35 PM
I naively added a new phone to my personal AT&T Family Plan, not realizing the hell I would encounter trying to port a number from a different market for the new phone.

Reading posts on this site and others, it seems that NBI is the solution, but that a wide rollout of NBI for consumers has been stalled for years. It seems some customers have had luck cajoling their way into business NBI accounts so they could mix numbers from different markets, and some subset of those have then been able to convert back to personal NBI so that they could regain OLAM, or add a FAN, etc.

I'm wondering if there is any shortcut through this maze of semi-deceit, whereby I could find some department at AT&T willing to convert me directly to a personal NBI ...

Amen. I've never seen an official rule that says its bad to move to NBI. And I'm not going to purposely put people through crap when Verizon can do it no problem.

Hate to break it to you but that person is breaking ATT policy. The only way you are getting an NBI account is if you are transferring a number off of a business account that is on ATT's network or if a number is coming off of a personal account that is in the NBI network. That person that says they do it for all their customers, hate to break it to you but you better hope that ATT doesn't cath it because you could get in trouble since you're technically breaking policy.

Well, all it took was the right person with the right system-melding superpowers.

Yes indeedy.

The technical expertise on this board is, I suppose, to be expected. You guys are the "in crowd," after all. What blew me away is the generosity of time and spirit.

I got two bona fide offers to exercise "system-melding superpowers" to get me through this gauntlet. Japhy had the right stuff at precisely the right time, but Iselltheshitoutofphones was all set to pull the strings for me, too. I am deeply grateful to you both.

(I have not completed the number port yet, but I have called the porting department to make sure of exactly what information they need, and the friendly guy there confirmed for me that my NBI account is good, and that it should be smooth sailing from here on in.)

Thank you, thank you, gentlemen! I...

Ah the NBI market. Total headache. I've seen multiple bad customer experiences with people trying to combine numbers from different markets.

This is something I wish AT&T would do a massive overhaul of their billing system for.

For any nonemployees looking for a little background:

Each account has a "market." Depending on where you are that market might comprise several states or just a portion of a state. You cannot mix numbers from different markets unless the account is in the NBI market.

NBI is a market for national business accounts. It stands for national billing instance. You can combine numbers from any markets you want onto an NBI account.

The whole "market" thing is a leftover artifact from the days of regional...
