I live in the Salt Lake City Metro area. I recently switched from a tdma at&t phone to a gsm at&t phone. I love AT&T for their "cool" phones and their data network but I don't get a good enough signal where I live, on the new gsm phone, for it to be worth keeping. I am thinking of porting to T-mobile. Does anyone know how t-mobile data (speeds, content, structure) compares to AT&T Wireless? There 19.99 unlimited Internet plan looks great. I sure like their 3000 Whenever minute voice plan. Does anyone know when AT&T gsm will have the signal strength that t-mobile gsm currently has?
Porting. I know that if your are still under contract with a carrier that you are required to pay an early termination fee to the carrier you are leavi...

I have t-mobile, and I had nothing problems with their phone, I cannot get a signal wherever Im at, car, store ect,its like talking on a cordless phone, all I get is dropped calls.I was impressed by the plans and cheaper plans, and good customer service, but lousy signal.Im switching back to sprint they have higher plans, and I never had a dropped call, u get what u pay for. At&t is the same as t-mobile, dropped calls, I would consider this before u switch!

maybe there's just something wrong with your phone? also.. remember that different carries have different signal strengths in different areas. t-mobile has awesome signal strenght in any urban area but if live in more of a rural area then it might not be as good. what works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone

clever thinking! That would be a bit of a loophole in their system, and if AT&T does have a 30 day period after changing responsibility it should work. As I understand it the port wouldn't go through much scrutiny, and should all process through the billing system, and not by a rep. I don't work for AT&T, but I know our billing system handles all our number ports. One thing to keep in mind though. If you change the billing responsibility, you can only port service to T-Mobile to the individual of the same name.
My advice would be to call AT&T, tell them you don't need the phone but you have a friend who might, and ask if he can cancel it if he doesn't like the phone.

The name you port to does not have to match the name of the account you are porting from. That's why carriers ask for a copy of the current acct bill. I have ported numbers from one name to another.
I thought AT&T's gurantee was 14 days, similar to all the other carriers. Did you buy the phone through a dealer or AT&T direct? Many dealers only allow for 14 days as well or they will charge you additionally.

its 30 days with at&t and most dealers have to obey at&t policies

On T-Mobile's network, and on every other one I've seen, the name does have to be the same to transfer a number from one name to another. The possibilities of fraud are far to great for this to be possible. If it can be transferred to a different name, people can possibly accept/transfer responsibility without proper documentation. The bill is requested to make sure all the information on the acct is correct. For instance, if there is a middle name on your old AT&T service, but not one on your new T-Mobile account you're trying to create, the number transfer won't go through. I know this is true because I deal with it on a daily basis.

Hi this is me again. Thanks for everyone's info. I think AT&T is giving me the runaround. I am wondering if I have found a loophole or not and if I have if they are trying to stall the change so I don't port w/o paying a early termination fee? I did the x-fer of responsiblity change last week and it still is not processed. I actually have done this financial responsiblity change thing a few times on prior lines of service and it only usually took an hour or so. If I can get the financial change done and port within the 30 days, so as to avoid the early termination charge it would be great. I actually used to be an Indirect dealer of AT&T and so I contacted my former Direct Sales rep contact and he doesn't think that this loophole ex...
