Network Band?
the way the GSM network with Tmobile works is that in the US and North America, the network operates off of the 1900 mHz frequency, in europe and asia, the networks are calibrated to 900 and 1800 or both.

T-Mobile uses only 1900.
AT&T and Cingular use the 850 bands in some areas. T-Mobile has no plans to use the 850.

It's not an issue of standards. GSM is a standard. This thread is about frequencies. 850 is one frequency band, and 1900 is the other. Those are the two frequencies that the FCC has set aside for cell phones here in the U.S.
Within each band, and for each given area of the country, the bands are sub-divided into sections that companies can own a license to. There are two 850 licenses and six 1900 licenses for any given area.
Each license was auctioned off years ago - they're all owned now. The only way to get a license now is to buy one from someone willing to sell. When someone is willing to sell a wireless license, (not often) it's usually for billions of dollars.
