poor reception for i860!

I took some advice and upgraded to the i860 from the newer release of the i730, newer meaning it was built at the end of Feb. 2005 supposedley being free from bugs and quirks!! Well here is just an opinion of mine regarding this phone. Now take into account I live in Chicagoland area. First I noticed the i860 seemed to have a problem switching towers it would hold on to one tower too long then drop my call, while doing side by side comparisons with my friends i730 he consistentley had more signal strength than me. I did end up going back to nextel store and getting my i730 back which seems to work best with the exception of the blackberry maybe, does anyone know if this is a software problem for the i860? And also is there a software update ...

There was an update released January of 2004. That has been the only one to my knowledge and these are the rev. numbers:

- This iDEN i860 R1C0101 Upgrade Utility will perform the following main operations on i860 phones as part of the upgrade.

- Upgrade software to version R1C.01.01
- Upgrade CSD to version CXX.06.05
- Upgrade font pack to version 1C.00.13.00
- Upgrade language pack to version 1C.00.42.00
- Upgrade carrier pack to version 1C.00.21.00
- Upgrade theme pack to version 1C.00.12.00

I don't know if it fixed any RF issues, but I haven't had any phone problems over the last few months after I called in a trouble ticket for 2 site locations and they fixed it.

if the 730 had more signal then the i860 that is kinda funny. the 730 has worse becuase they did a terrible job with the codeplugs and rf signal drivers. i suggest you upgrade the software again, like markf suggested in his post.

sometimes it could be just the i860 sometimes its not. i have an i860 and i havnt ever had a problem with that phone. i have a problem with the tower, but not the phone.

2 things that i detect and probably markf can add more to it.

1. a software problem and a defect in the phone
2. a network problem.

suggestions?
call up customer care or go to a store to see if that is the case with the first option.
with the second option i suggest you calling up tech support and file as many network tickers as you...

I'm sure you guys are right but it seems like the i730 that was made after feb. of 2005 seems to work very well. You guys are absolutely right about the older versions of the i730 as they were terrible but it seems as though they did a much better job with the newer versions! Is this true? What is it that they did different with the newer version of the i730? Because I did notice that my i730 has bigger numbers on the outside caller i.d. compared to the older version, I seem to get almost full signal everywhere with this phone. I'm a little leery about trying another i860 but you guys say that it's definitely not the i860 that has rf issues right?

well i had both versions of the i730. 1 before the update and after the update. i saw a bit of improvment, however, it wasnt like the i860. the i860 they did such a better job that i got rid of both the 730's for the i860. why? becuase of the poor rf performance vs the i860.

like i said earlier i did see an improvment, but its not enough, especially if you dont live that close to a tower. the i860 works very good for me.

"I'm a little leery about trying another i860 but you guys say that it's definitely not the i860 that has rf issues right?"

yes, i think so. if i had a choice to get 1 thousand i730's or 1 thousands i860s i would get the i860's in a heartbeat. thats how much i appreciate the i860 over the 730. when i had the i730 ...

I also was curious about this i930 I've seen pics of it and it definitely looks pretty cool!!! Do you think this is a phone worth waiting for? I'm hearing this phone might not be as good as expected though!

yea, all i can say about the i930 is that there are a lot of problems with the signals between iden and gsm.

do i think the phone is worth waiting for? well, it depends. why do you need a pda phone? why dont you just get the blackberry 7520? i have been that according to my beloved nextel partners they said its coming out in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year. when it comes out for nxtp it comes out for nextel. also nextel partners mentioned something about a new blackberry. so you have 3 options. wait for the i930 and buy it. wait for the new blackberry and get it, or finally get the blackberry 7520 now. or another option, dont get anything and stick with your i860 now.
