I was talking with a manager in a store here in Florida and he said that Alltel has plans to be #4 by the end of next year. Does anyone know if they are planning a merger or a buyout of another carrier? I heard a rumor that Sprint was for sale if the $$$ was right.
...
😳 🤣 😲 ha alltel and sprint
...
Glad you find that so funny 👿 but since they are both CDMA carriers anything is possible!
...
not a merger, but a purchase of sorts. They have purchased the divested properties in Oklahoma, and possibly other locations, from the Cingular/AT&T buyout. This purchase includes nearly 200,000 customers and a presence in the Oklahoma market, which previously was dominated by Cingular/AT&T. So basically sit back and watch them start their rise... Oklahoma was the lesser of two evils, now there will be a new kid on the block with a larger service area and also service in the rural parts of OK.

WELL I'M SORRY TO TELL YOU BUT ALLTEL IS CDMA AND SPRINT IS PCS. THEY ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES. NOW VERIZON WIRELESS AND ALLTEL COULD MERGE AND BE FINE BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH CDMA. I SHOULD KNOW SINCE I WORK FOR ONE OF THESE COMPANIES.
...
Actually, Sprint is CDMA *and* PCS. PCS refers to the frequency used, not the cellular technology. Its right there in the Phonescoop carrier description for Sprint:
Sprint operates a nationwide, all-digital, all-CDMA, all-PCS (1900 MHz) network. Unlike most carriers, their network was designed this way from the beginning. (Many other carriers were formed via mergers, resulting in inconsistent technology and services throughout the country.) Sprint recently upgraded their network to the cdma2000 1xRTT standard, providing high-speed data service. https://www.phonescoop.com/carriers/carrier.php?c=1 »

Gee it's nice to know that one of these companies has an employee like you on stafff that is so versed in the technology of their phones. I will be able to sleep tonight!
Whatever!!!

To erinreina- Your lucky you do not work for me. You obviously need to study up on your product knowledge.

See I knew sprint was interested in merging I just had the wrong Tel, Nextel not Alltel. 😡 Alltel always a bridesmaid never a bride
...
Wow! #298 to #4. I'm glad I work there, well, then again, I'm still at the bottom as a lackey. So we'll just take the customer's "heat".
Should anything like that transpire, then all of the various merger issues will, too.
Sigh, college looks soooo good, anymore....
...
Maybe you should try college since your math skills are lacking last time I looked Alltel was the 6th largest carrier in the US. Promotions come with ability and hard work!
...
Overall, according to Money magazine's top corporations in the global market.
Alltel is 298 and Verizon (for example) is 18.
So that's where I'm getting my facts.
I never went for the assistant manager position, because after 15+ years in customer service, I realized that personally, I've worked long enough with the general public, and my goals aren't leaning toward the headaches of management!
...
So find a new job! Or are you there just for your own personal gain and not at all for that of the company that pays you?
...
Alltel would never want to buy Sprint. Sprint is in way to much dept. Trying to constantly build their network. Alltel will become #4 if it beats out nextel.
...
You know it would be cool to go to a better provider like Cingular or T-Mobile, but Cingular isn't availible in my area and T-Mobile isn't availible in all of North Carolina. So it looks like I'm stuck with Alltel...

They are not up for sale, they are the 5th largest cell carrier in the nation now that Nextel has been bought by Sprint.

What about Alltel merging or acquiring US Cellular http://www.uscc.com/ . they would fit good together since USCell has converted to CDMA plus it would expand coverage for both carriers to help them compete with the new Jumbo wireless companies? 🙄
...
I thought the same thing. US Cellular would be a great partner if Verizon does not scoop up Alltel before then. The Stock Market seems to be thinking that Alltel is a candidate to be bought not buy hence the stock price increase recently. Their footprint matches well with Verizon. Supposedly US Cell is NOT for sale for any reasonable price. As for the Oklahoma purchase Alltel's footprint will be limited to Oklahoma City and the North part of Oklahoma. They will not have Tulsa or Western Oklahoma which Cingular will. Cingular dominates Oklahoma with coverage in OKC, Tulsa, Enid, South Oklahoma, Lawton and Northeast Oklahoma. Alltel will have to also compete head/head with US Cellular who just lauched Oklahoma City and has Tulsa and a similar ...

I see a US Cell/Alltel merger happening before a Verizon buyout of Alltel. Alltel management seems to be to gun ho on be a single entity. ALLTEL wireless with US Cellular and Alltel Land Line and TDS Land Line may be a small but formabile force!
...
Well, well, well....this topic has gotten many many replies... Now for some news that can probably be taken to the bank: Alltel will not be merging with US Cellular--but they may be joining them. Verizon is looking to make a bid to buy BOTH carriers...a move in which they would tie Cingular for #1 in the wireless industry again; all in one fell swoop. Also, as for the Oklahoma market, this move would finish the Verizon inflow, since they just acquired spectrum in Tulsa. It would mean that Verizon would gain coverage in all of the state. To me it sounds like a case of spoiled-brat syndrome setting in because Verizon wanted the divested AT&T properties and spectrum in the OK market. Since Cingular did not want to sell it to them at any costs, ...

I hope your theory remains just that. As an Alltel master agent and owner of several locations anything Verizon buys means a huge cut in commissions. Which means anyone that is in this business to make more than a five figure paycheck will have to sell used cars.
...
I'm not sure Verizon would want to purchase Alltel or USCC almost all of both of these companies nationwide coverage is provided by Verizon wireless. And with Alltel's high roaming charged it would only make sence to buy out Alltel if they just wanted a larger customer base.

What really sucks is those of us in the Oklahoma City Market that want to go to Cingular can't. I am stuck in a conttract with AT&T and now I am being told that the only way I can go to Cingular is to pay an ETF on all 3 of my lines.
I did not ask to be sold to a regional carrier and I think that it sucks that they are going to hold us to the contracts we had with AT&T.
...
Ahh...but you also did not ask to be signed up with Cingular either, thus the AT&T contract. Had the buy out not taken place, you still wouldn't be able to switch to Cingular service without the ETF either. It means that for those in the divested markets its just business as usual. But I would be willing to bet the benefits would outweigh the move to Cingular. Remember: the CDMA network that AllTel/Verizon offers dwarfs the GSM network of AT&T and Cingular. It will be a good thing, I promise. Also, you can classify AllTel as a regional carrier if you want, but with the wholesale roaming agreements they have with Verizon, I'd take their network size over Cingular's any day of the week.

Agree 100%, In West Florida Cingular is good, but Alltel is better. We have areas that are not digital yet and you can only get an Analog signal which is not great but is much better than No Service. I travel quite a bit and take my Alltel phone everywhere (Alaska, Hawaii, North Carolina, California, Texas, Illinois, etc) and it performs flawlessly because of the above mentioned roaming agreement with Verizon. Put it this way, you get Verizon coverage at the Alltel price, for those of us who have both services available in our respective markets it means more minutes for the same $$$. National Freedom is the best plan if you need national coverage. The only thing regional about Alltel is their stores.
In my humble opinion,

Agree 100%. Remember, in one of my previous posts: sounds like AllTel is about to be swallowed by the giant known as Verizon anyhow. The move only makes sense...and in that case the AllTel customers did not ask to be sold to Verizon, but since the two companies compete in only about 3% of their respective markets and they share all of their towers anyhow, it would make sense. So you in the OKC market would also be sold to Verizon...which should make you happier I would guess.

Not to mention Alltel will not convert current AT& T customers overnight the process will take some time and you will be migrated to CDMA slowly (I have heard it takes up to six months to complete this process). By then your contract may be up and you will be free to choose any carrier and port your current number. Before jumping ship I would encourage you to give Alltel a chance and I am sure you will find what I already know they have first class service for a bargain price.
...
Alltel will be in competition with Cingular in my area. When we have 100% digital voice and data, with a new UMTS network coming late in 2005...what will Alltel come up with to compete? It will be interesting to say the least.
Better phones, new services, and higher data speeds should be on Alltel's list of needed improvements to keep current customers and attract new ones.
...
AllTel has a CDMA 1xRTT network up and running in many areas right now, which is a very comparable speed to UMTS. And its already in larger supply than UMTS thanks to the romaing agreements with Verizon. And if Verizon purchases AllTel what will throw the 1xEVDO into the mix, which would make Cingular shake at the thought. The 1xEVDO network has speeds up to 2400kbps, that's cable modem speed on cellular. AllTel has expressed interest in acquiring this technology as well. Now, granted AllTel a the moment doesn't have a reat selection of handsets or wireless modems to take advantage of it, but they will come soon enough.
Speedywalk

Alltel is slow to act on new technology for good reason. They test technology and handsets for that matter to make sure when you the retail customer goes to use them the work. I was on the flip side of this line of thinking a few years ago with Sprint, they would bring out all the coolest phones and technology way before everyone else. Problem was that none of it did what I originally got a cell phone for,
TO MAKE & RECEIVE CALLS!!! 👿
I could not get signal indoors 😳
I have a digital camera to take pictures and a laptop to get the net. Thank you Alltel for selecting and testing phones to make and receive calls when I need to!!!
...
I agree 100 percent. All of my friends at school have a difficult time sending text messages because they can only get an analog signal indoors. I on the other hand get great (digital) coverage everywhere I go. and I can use packet data and pretty soon I'll even be able to make video calls on my cell phone. I'm not talking about in ten years I'm talking about in two years at the most!!

That was addressed towards speedywalk... i recal him saying he worked for ATTWS/Cingular but there's obviously no loyalty if that's true...

I do work for ATTWS, not for Cingular. And as I have said before, I work for one of the divested markets: the Oklahoma market to be specific. There is 100% loyalty because we know that our market has been purchased by AllTel. Therefore our customers, towers, and employees will be a part of AllTel. So what I am discussing is absoluley loyal to my employer.

I thought Cingular was At&t!!!
...
In about 95% of the counrty that is true...but there were 16 markets nationwide that Cingular had to sell the AT&T assests, customers, and spectrum off to other carriers to avoid monopolistic situations in the areas. In those markets, they are two separate entities.
