800 Mhz
I noticed when roaming on Verizon networks my signal strength is reduded significantly indoors (ie Chicago and Orlando). I believe Verizon is converting more and more of their network to 1900 Mhz for data but this reduces building penetration. This has always been a problem for Sprint. I do not see many other carriers running 800 Mhz on CDMA, why? Can Alltel expand this frequency further? It appears to be the CDMA frequency of choice overseas in places like China.

Verizon doesn't have any 800 MHz spectrum in the State of Florida. The only spectrum they have is 1.9 GHz.

I thought I made it clear that I was referring to their entire network not just Florida that is why I mentioned Chicago. You really did not answer any of my questions you just told me what I already knew!

To expand they must buy spectrum. This is mandated by what the FCC will allow, what is availiable and fighting other carriers for the spectrum based on cost. They will only let the public know about an expansion once it is completed or at least guaranteed. 🙂

Most 800mhz liscenses are owned by older cellular providers. When cellular service started every market was sold with an A and a B provider. The A provider was generally a cell provider and the B in many areas was designated to the local Ma Bell affiliate for Cell service for competitive reasons. Later on the FCC started auctioning PCS licenses in the 1.9mhz band. Verizon is the B carrier in Chicago and primarily uses 800mhz, but they do have a 10mhz chunk kept from the sale of the Primeco entity that is now U.S. Cellular in Chicago.
