Imagine going from America's Largest Wireless Provider to 2nd. That's what happened to Verizon following the AT&T/Cingular merger. So Verizon made up some ground, but even still it became clear that they would never surpass AT&T in that manner. I am not stating that this is the main reason for the merger though. I believe that the ability to offer current Verizon customers enhanced services (VZ Navigator, 1X data and EVDO where Alltel has rolled out) is a much bigger deal than gaining 13 million Alltel customers. Verizon and Alltel had no data roaming agreement and neither did Verizon and Sprint. Alltel and Sprint DO have a data roaming agreement. So by acquiring Alltel, Verizon is not able to offer 1X and EVDO coverage in current All...
