ok,
I have a friend with alltel whose phone is almost dead. I have several backup verizon phones and I would give her one to use, but Im not sure if an alltel customer service rep would activate it. Anyone know the answer to this one?
...
you can if you tell alltel it is a alltel phone just do *22801 or *22800 once they change the esn number!! If for some reason alltel doesnt offer that same model like just lie and come up with something similar they will hook line and sinker believe you!! just call 1-800-ALLTEL-1 from a landline and they will do this for you for example I have to Blackberry storm working with all data and email on alltel so it can be done you just have to be smarter than the rep

Did this myself. I got a Verizon branded V3c setup on a spare agent line. It involved some tinkering with network mode but I have had no problems with it. Only bummer is not being able to download ringtones but I just bluetooth MP3s.
Some you can and some you can't, I can confirm the V3c is able to though.

well I have a spare u740, which is not offered by alltel. Should I just say that the phone is a different Samsung phone that IS offered by alltel?
And what type of tinkering did you have to do. Details?
...
just tell them you are using the samsung muse the will activate it with no problem once you get the esn changed you need to find out the nam info such as the mdn (phone number) and the min which means I would manual program the phone and then you need your sys id for alltel then go into the system settings lock it on home mode (this is why you need the system id) then do the *22800 or try *22801 these usually force it onto alltel network the only thing is that it will only work for voice and basic texting until the buyout is complete !! If they want ringtones just use the microsd and download the ringers to that card!! just tell them you are using the samsung muse the will activate it with no problem
...
where do you get the system ID from?
...
no problem...so i need the following:
-sys ID (from google)
-the 22xxx number that you dial after the device is activated (got that)
-mdn (which is your cell #)
-and did you say that I need to set the device to home
...
correct
esn change
tell them it is activated and thank you so they will get off the phone tell them u made a test call and it worked!! Then you will
manualy program
sys id
mdn
min you can get this from alltel.com login to your account! I also believe the sysid is under the info on alltel.com you also might be able to change the esn on alltels website
Set the network to home then
*22801 or *22800 depends if alltel is the a side or the b side of cdma
...
I changed my Network Mode to Local, manual programmed my phone with the MDN, MIN and SID. I dialed *228 option 2, switched back to Standard Scan and was all set.

Hello'
Any idea how to do this setup with a blackberry storm the esn change, and manual setup...
...
I hope I don't sound like a total idiot (apologize ahead of time), I was told by my alltel rep that I could use a verizon phone....everyone here seems very knowledgeable....HOW do I do it? I have the phone (dare), got the msid, homesid & homeNID from my old phone...
Thank you SO much for any help!

...
cool. Thank you for the info. Did using a berry require any other tinkering?
...
well you had to have the alltel service books which are pretty easy to find if you need a copy of them I can upload them or email them to you crackberry.com will help out alot when trying to do things like that with the berrys

I know this is an old thread that might have been addressed in another, but I have been using Verizon's Samsung Renown for the last couple of weeks in Charlottesville without a hitch on my Alltel plan. I found a good, slightly used one on eBay. Now, all I get is voice service, but for me, that's all I need or want. I love the Renown! Solid phone, few bells and whistles as far as domestic service is concerned, but it does have the quad-band GSM built in for worldwide use. Honestly, I'm really happy with it. My contract with Alltel actually ends on May 30th, and I just plan to stay with Alltel on a month to month basis until someone says I can't.

I have a Palm Treo, and just love the phone. Is it possible to follow that same process for a Sprint Palm Treo?
...
I myself have never done that not to say that it can't be done I know that you will have to get alltel firmware and for starters sprint phones are usually locked but you may be able to activate the esn on alltel and then do the *22801 or *22800 that usually forces it to program but you are going to need a way to flash it to alltel because of all the network settings and alltel needs to have the same model unless someone else knows a way to do it
...
Ok what if i have a blackberry and add it to the alltel network, i cant use the data then can i? without roaming...and i thought if your phone roamed what so ever it would be the roaming rate since its not a 'branded' phone
...
Not correct if you do the *22800 or *22801 and do the program phone option then call back then do a prl roaming list update that will download the current alltel prl so you won't roam and you can use the data with a blackberry long as you have the service books I have had alltel for years and have never used an alltel phone trust me it can be done
...
Well maybe when i get a new verizon phone i will shoot you an email and you can help me out with this, im lookin to get me a storm or a env2
...
Yea I would really try to do that before the systems are merged I could see vzw making you change your plan even if you bought the phone from a third party
