ALLTEL Divested Market Question
I live in Hickory NC and am in a divested market what does this really mean for me I know they will stay alltel until buyer comes along or so i think!! Can anyone help me here

Since you are in a divested market, you will continue to be an Alltel customer until a carrier decides they want to acquire your geographic area. Then, you will become a customer of that new carrier. However, you still have the option of staying with Alltel even after the new carrier acquires your area. But, once you decide you want a new phone, you will have to sign a new contract for a new phone with that new carrier. (For instance, US Cellular - or whoever acquires your area). You could always switch to Verizon if you wanted to as well if you didn't like the carrier who acquired you.

which area will prob go to ATT or US Cellular? Also how could I stay with alltel ? Won't they cease to exist

well who is the likely buyer in these markest which ones will likely go to sprint and which ones will go gsm ? I just want to avoid going with tmobile if anything I want us cellular or att or sprint

NO one knows Verizon is trying to file an extension to get more time cause no one is buying Alltel yet... But a probable buyer is a private group who will keep it Alltel just how Alltel Started by private investors or thats how they have been for the past few years

Alltel wouldn't be able to regain the same size they had prior to even being bought out by the investment firms. AT&T & Verizon hold the lion share of the licensed spectrum (especially in the 700 band). So if Alltel's divested markets were become the new Alltel under new owners (or previous owners), then it would take years to even grow again, as there are fewer carriers left, and no new spectrum available.
Also, Alltel's overall refusal to build out in PCS was their own fault at expanding in markets that were big enough for them to build out. Nearly all of their PCS networ...

Maybe the investors who buy out alltel would later on buy out sprint and then bang they could keep the alltel name and I think that would be awesome!! I am really sad to see alltel sell to big red!

I disagree with the idea that failing to bid in AWS or build out PCS was a mistake. From a profitability standpoint it was ingenius. Alltel was about making money...not debt. What made them an attractive acquisuition in the first place? Their bottom line. What if they had built out PCS or bid in AWS? They would have been much more in debt. Ford knew what he was doing. He walked away from this deal with fat pockets.

If Alltel really wanted to grow, they needed to stop relyng on 800 band licenses for their expansion, since AT&T & Verizon hold the cellular licenses in the top 10 markets, and they're not giving those up. They had a license or 2 for Milwaukee Wisconsin, and they sat on it...

Alltel was working on growing in that aspect. They where working on buying Sprint out. Some powers that be had paperwork all over there offices with offers, etc. to make to Sprint and work on purchasing sprint. Then they came in one day, not even knowing it was going to happen, and told that Verizon was buying Alltel.
