what is going to happen to southern linc when iden is phased out in 2010?
...
southern linc. Has no plans to remove to their IDEN network. Motorola has never stated that there disconting IDEN. People around the world use iden http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Digit al_Enhanced_Network.
...
renardlee lives in michigan and has Cingular.... what the devil would he/she know about Southern Linc? 😛
...
they use sprints IDEN Network which has said many times they have no plans to phase it out. In fact they are adding to it.
...
they do not use sprints iden network. They hate sprint! they have their own network, I use their service and have visited their datacenter and seen their cell cites.
...
Sprint is actually extending the shutoff date now to 2012. In the meantime, they are going to migrate voice and data for Nextel phones over to CDMA and keep IDEN for the PTT at least until then. After that, who knows? SL has no plans whatsoever to shut down THEIR iden network at all. IDEN is a very good and reliable network and I've stated in other forums that the capacity issues Sprint says Nextel is facing in certain parts of the country is why they claim they're looking to shut it off. If that were true, then SL would also be having the same problems as well, especially since they have roaming agreements with Nextel outside their native coverage areas. If Nextel callers can't get through, then anyone using SL and roaming in a Nextel cover...

I know this is southerlinc forum however you open the door. Sprint is testing Qchat which if goes as they have described will be just as fast as it is on IDEN. But we will see.
...
Even if QChat can can connect as quickly as IDEN PTT, one thing it will never have is short dialing. Anyone with an IDEN phone knows what I'm talking about. The ability to enter only one or two numbers on the keypad and instantly two-way someone on your fleet. Let's say someone had a two-way # that was 123*456*7. That person would only need to press key #6 and then the PTT to two-way #123*456*6. Same deal with #'s 1-5. QChat will never be able to offer this immensely time saving shortcut, nor do I think they'll be able to group connect up to 100 PTT numbers at the same time. IDEN is just plain better and faster. Like I said, Sprint is just plain old dumb if they shut off Nextel's IDEN network and try to substitute it with something else beca...

I hear what your saying however they won't get all of them unless they but the nextel network. Your right that is a great feature. But you know what else is a great feature. Bieng on a nationwide network so you can talk across the nation something Southernlinc will never be able to do. So regionally yes you might get some customers but you cover only 127,000 square miles of how many millions in the entire US?
...
No, they won't get all of them, especially where SL doesn't have service, but I bet they will get a bunch of them if they shut down IDEN, which they'd love to be able to do. No big corporation should want to do anything that compromises their customer base in any market, and I personally believe that's exactly what would happen if they do this. I'll put it this way, as good as Sprint has been to me as a customer (and Nextel prior to the merger), I'd still seriously consider moving to SouthernLinc if they had service in my area. It's a wait and see deal right now, and I'm waiting and seeing along with a lot of other folks, as to what Sprint decides to do.
...
I personally think unless sprint has a PTT on the CDMA side as good as the IDEN side Iden won't go anywhere.
...
I don't think it'll be as good. I think they know it won't either, but their hoping it'll be good enough to get by. CDMA has its strenghts, but PTT isn't one of them. A hybrid phone (CDMA for voice & data, IDEN for PTT) would be good if they keep it that way. Even there, they need to add 800mhz roaming into the mix to make it worthwhile.
...
by 800 mhz roaming u mean cdma because they also need to add the option of going back to iden because in my area we have nextel but no sprint
...
Voip works great for phone service so I think PTT it will work just fine. However this being SouthernLinc forum I doubt they will go anywhere and will probably be the only company in the US to have IDEN network for as long as Moto supports it!
...
not only that, but the current lease isn't up until 2012...
...
wow, how did u know that and how do u know i use cingular, unless i put that sumwhere, i was just curious 😳 😲
...
Ancient Chinese secret 🤤 😁
...
Happy New years, um i see how u figured it out(as far as carrier wise), i put that on my profile page, *smacks head* DUHH!!, now how u found out wat city i live in, i still wonder, aint no big deal tho.

Happy New Years back at ya! 😁
I hope you had alot of snow too, keep it up there! There isnt any snow allowed here till I finish with my 4-wheeler.

Actually, this individuals information is based upon one companies ideas solely... Sprint Nextel is going to cancel their Nextel based iDEN network in 2010 in order to go towards the CDMA Sprint based network. In other words, while Nextel has always had problems with having service quality much lower than the average SouthernLINC Wireless user, they've now decided to sell out their network to another company with similar problems and give up on their network completely. Thus, SouthernLINC Wireless will be one of the few iDEN based networks left in existance, and probably the only one that works in 2010.
...
Lets not forget, Southern Linc was in business long before nextel was even thought of 😁 😉
...
No one is arguing at least not me that they are a good regional carrier. But that is all they are is a regional carrier. And until that changes this alone will hurt them from getting allot of nextels base when and if they shut done. That short dialing shortfall as nice of a shortcut it is will not be enough.
...
I used to work for Motorola repairing iDEN phones, from Nextel, Southern Linc, and international customers. The great majority of phones came from Nextel. If Sprint wipes their slate clean of iDEN phones, and it looks like they will, I don't see how it will be profitable for Motorola to continue to develop and manufacture new iDEN phones. Maybe Southern Linc can buy the Nextel towers that Sprint takes out of service, and expand that way. Truthfully, that is the only way I can see iDEN (and Southern Linc) remaining alive. That is a few years off, so we will see what happens.
...
Never thought about that. And even when sprint gets rid of Iden they will most likely keep the towers they own as it will have CDMA on them!
...
This is an absolutely ridiculous train of thought... First off, yes SouthernLINC is a regional carrier, and because of that no, we won't get a large number of Sprint Nextel customers in the United States because we don't cover those portions... But what you're saying is that because we're a regional carrier we won't get many numbers at all... That's completely insane... SouthernLINC will easily pick up a large number of people in the region we cover simply because these people will want to continue on the iDEN based network and we're one of the choices left. And how in the world can you assume Motorola will just stop selling iDEN because they aren't selling to Nextel anymore? You really believe that Motorola is just going to turn their bac...

If Motorola doesn't make money on a product, do you think they are going to continue to make it? If the only people they can sell IDEN phones to are Southern Linc and the small customer base that lives overseas, do you think that is enough to make the phones profitable for Motorola?
Here is a news flash. In the Motorola plant in Plantation Florida, where they design and prototype IDEN phones, people in the IDEN departments are getting laid off, 50 in the most recent round. Motorola is laying off people in the IDEN sector as they transition IDEN to the CDMA sector. Who sells CDMA phones, coult it be Sprint, together with Nextel?
Once Nextel dies, so will IDEN, and any other companies that rely solely on IDEN for their infrastr...

Who said Motorola isn't making any money on IDEN products and service? Many businesses across the country STILL rely on this network for their walkie-talkie needs.

I would say yes. Besides, SouthernLinc is not the only other IDEN carrier in the U.S. There's Airtel out west and other smaller ones in places like Florida and Alabama. IDEN operates in about 12...

Well, in a few years we will see. IF Motorola continues to make iDEN phones after 2012, one thing will be certain. It will be on a greatly reduced scale. That means there won't be very many options.
...
look at the choices now. on the nextel side, half of the iden phones in that were in the lineup over the past 12 months are now discontinued.
they are trying to make due with the powersource phones, but there is no variety in them either.

😎 fist of all befor any wize guy want to critisize my speling... Q_Q i dont care, i have terrible speling, and i use a lot of slang and i dont care to change it... jajajaj 😁
well to the point... i work in a vendor for SPRIT in Monterrey Mexico... i have many thing to say about sprint or nextel wich i dont care to mention @ this moment...
mormor21 has a verry strong point their are alot of carriers that use iDen not only in the U.S. but in the whole world.. in mexico; Nextel Mexico is one of if not the most rapid groing carrier bc of its popularity... (we use GSM as the main svc provider and we also have CDMA )
their are two reason why we buy nextel in mex.
Well one of the reson nextel is growing real fast in mexico its ...

Moto won't stop as long as their is money in it to keep going. As you pointed out there are many countries that use IDEn. And moto makes phones for specific countries. IE Japan. Were they are the only country to use WCDMA for voice. So as long as their is money to be made they will continue. Or someone will buy their rights to IDEN and then you will have someone else that makes it.
