SD is a type of card, not a company.

True! I didn't even think of that. 🙂

But when talking about memory cards, SD usually means Secure Digital. I've never heard someone use SD as an abbreviation for SanDisk. That would be too confusing.

I used to work at Best Buy and you'd be surprised at how many people think SD stands for SanDisk. It was the most popular brand sold based primarily on that fact.
