HEVC

(H.265)

A standard encoding format for compressed video content. It is designed to replace the older H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC format.

Compared to that standard, it offers 25–50% better efficiency, allowing less data for the same video quality or better video quality using the same amount of data.

HEVC supports up to 8K resolution and HDR.

Smartphones started supporting HEVC in 2014–2016. Most smartphones can record and play HEVC content, although recording video in HEVC is often optional and not always the default.
