Matter

An open industry standard for smart-home technology, designed to replace a variety of incompatible proprietary standards.

Matter relies on multiple underlying radio technologies, including Bluetooth LE for setup, Thread for low-bandwidth devices such as door locks and motion sensors, and Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth devices such as cameras. All of these use common unlicensed frequency bands, including the 2.4 GHz band.

A Matter network typically requires at least one hub device that serves as a border router between the Thread network and the Internet (usually via Wi-Fi). This functionality is built in to some smart speakers, smart displays, and higher-end Wi-Fi routers.
