A new MVNO for active youth will be launching in the third quarter. Amp'd will use EV-DO phones running on Verizon's high speed network. All of the phones will feature Push to Talk, a camera, a memory card slot and an icon that will light up when the phone has EV-DO coverage. The carrier plans to have three models for sale at launch. The first will be a Kyocera slider similar to the recently announced Slider Remix that should sell for around $100. There will also be a mid-level slider from Motorola. A third phone is expected for launch, however the manufacturer and design have not been finalized. Amp'd will offer downloadable music, video and customization content hand selected for the carrier. In addition to video clips, they have built mobile broadcast units to stream live video from special events. In another bold move, all content on the handset, whether it has been downloaded or programmed by the user, will be backed up to Amp'd servers, and purchased music content can also be downloaded to users' PCs as well as the phone. The service will be available in both pre- and post- paid flavors and will be sold over the web and through select retail partners.

is this a whole new carrier?

just trying to clarify, is amp'd a new carrier (like vzw, cingular, tmobile) just running off of vzw's network or will they have to put up their own separate towers?
yerp, its a whole new carrier, just using Verizion's towers instead of building their own.
Yes. Amp'd is basically a whole new carrier. They will have their own phone lineup, services, plans, sales channels, customer service billing, and everything else. As far as consumers are concerned, it will be a whole new carrier - an alternative to ...

VZW Prepaid

Virgin is a MVNO using Sprint's network, and Sprint doesn't offer prepaid services itself (or at least in the east Texas area that I'm aware of). So, would this new MVNO using VZW's network be a replacemet of VZW prepaid services and if so would we be seeing Amp'd sold in VZW stores?

from the looks of it there is a chance that this isn't going to be prepaid at all.

No. Amp'd will offer both pre-paid and post-paid service.

When I met with them, they talked about being careful which retail partners they would align with. Mostly they will sell the service direct via the web. They have a very slick customization ...

Coverage Area

Any idea of the coverage area for this MVNO? Will it be America's Choice coverage or Enhanced Services (VZW owned) coverage? Considering its usage of EVDO, I'm guessing the latter.
I would assume that it will be whatever EVDO markets Verizon has...which is very limited. There's got to be something bad about this because it seems too good to be true.
