This changes everything...
If the G1 is successful, the entire wireless industry could change forever.
When you remove the need for proprietary OS's by the providers, you could buy a phone like you would a TV and pay as you go for whatever service you like. No more contracts, no BS... It would force carriers to invest in better coverage, faster networks, and be more competetive with pricing and plans.
The dynamic of how cell phones are bought with a service contract could be old news... When a service provider pulls some BS, you could leave without consequence and use your phone on another network!
That is my dream... and I'm pretty sure thats what Martin Luther King Jr. was dreaming about too...

This might even lead to manufacturers creating phones that are cross network compatable one set of radios for GSM, one set for CDMA, LTE, WiMAX, iDEN (until it dies). There would be a setting in the phone to enable the phone to search for one network type at a time, (as not to kill battery life). I would be all for this. Only our job gets harder. How resistant do you think people are going to be to the change! Their phone prices are going to start at more than $200. With the economy I am just not sure how feasable this type of a change will be, without killing the industry. On the other hand, carriers would be more liquid in terms of assets, as they don't have to tie up all the money in phone inventory.
It will be interesting either ...

You could see lower monthly prices across the board.
I buy all my phones used so I don't have to deal with contracts and when I see a phone I want, I buys it, don't care what provider.
I would love to be able to buy ONE phone and try out each network as I see fit.
