What does rooting a phone do? For instance, I have the Droid Incredible and I am wondering what it does when rooted compared to when it isn't? I have seen the word alot and have never taken the time to ask until now.

Rooting allows you to do advanced things on your phone that generally your carrier doesn't want you to do (for example wireless hotspot tethering without paying additionally to your carrier).

Rooting is like using a computer at work, for example. Usually you are unable to access control panel (for windows) or make certain changes to system properties. Rooting would be like a admin logged in with full control panel access and able to change any setting on the computer they wished.

Without rooting your phone there are many things you will not be able to do. For example, overclock your CPU, change your ROM (custom versions of Android), ect.

Try XDA Developers Forum (run a Google search). This is THE place for all Android developement (Rooting, ROMs, ect). Also try using Universal Root (see previous post in this forum) about an APK that *may* root your phone in one click. My friend tried it on an incredible and said it didn't work but I didn't get to check (don't know what version it was running).

I saw one said they were running 2.1 and it did not work. I believe the update for 2.2 released earlier today because I have a friend that just got updated.

Yeah I'm the one that posted that. But like I said, I didn't see it fail... Its worth a try. Even if it doesn't work, you can still find a rooting guide on XDA.
