i just want to be able to *directly* download photos to my computer from my phone. do i need the $25 "motorola compatible" usb cable from cingular? is it possible that there is a cheaper manufacturer for the same exact cable? (PS - the v220 isn't even listed on the box as being supported by the cingular-supplied cable)

and why do i need the extra "data access" feature added to my voice plan? you mean we have to pay extra just to download the photos on our phones? note that i don't want to email the photos to anyone, just move them to my computer!

and why do i have to have the cingular "connection manager" software if all i want is to connect the cable to my computer from my phone? the instructions tell me to go online and log on ...

You can easily find the usb cables on ebay or any good electronics store. In fact, my usb cable is the one that came with my Canon digital camera. Works fine with my v180 (same thing as the 220 minus the camera, since i already have one) They try to rip you off with their own cables and such.

Email me at neoufo51@yahoo.com and I will help you out with the software portion of your request. I just loaded a few mp3s into my phone since I hate the ringtones, and you can do it too. 🙂

thank you! i appreciate the offer to help me out.

the $25 did sound like a ripoff since my phone is not even listed on the box that cingular sells for $25 that's supposedly "motorola-compatible"

The Motorola Compatible cable's specs didn't list the v220 as being a compatible phone because it's not. The v220's one of the more recent phones by Moto that has a mini-usb port rather than their standard data port. That cable is made to be used with the v551, MPx220, v400, v600 etc. with that variety of port.

As for the connect packages and other features and software, they're for using your phone as a dial-up modem with a PDA or laptop. You don't need them to do any kind of connection specifically to transfer files from a phone to a computer and vice versa.
