I won't include the others (Sanyo, Sony Ericsson, etc.) because they either don't offer enough models to remain competitive, or they don't offer models in the US.
I've been in wireless since before anybody besides sci-fi nerds used the word android. HTC was the first, but that does not necesarilly mean the be best. I would say at first, their models were of poor quality, but nowadays they offer solid devices. Samsung, in my opinion takes the title of highest quality devices - so far.
I have faith, though that HTC will start to introduce models with 1.5 GHz processors, Super AMOLED screens, 4.5" screens, etc. to remain competitive. I'd gamble that HTC w...

I prefer HTC already. Sense is, in my opinion, the best UI on the market right now. As for the Samsungs, I think they have the best hardware on the market, unfortunately they preload way too much garbage onto most of their phones. I have heard great things about the Nexus S (Samsung phone without the bloat) and would probably go that route if the Thunderbolt werent right around the corner.
Long story short, I'd take HTC phones right out of the box. Rooting a Samsung probably gives you the best phone for your money though.

I'm not an HTC fan. I think they have always made crap and are just making better crap now. Samsung makes some quality stuff, but the Super AMOLED is theirs and aren't going to share it with anyone. HTC does have a pretty cool interface, but their devices are buggy and have horible battery life. LG makes quality devices, however, their specs tend to be behind everyone else. Motorola pushes the industry with high spec phones, but their tech is hit or miss.
In the end, I go for Motorola first because I am the technophile and want the coolest phone with the best features. Second, I pick LG. Not the coolest, but reliable. Samsung is doing a lot of things right, so they are not out of the question. I'd put them second, but their specs aren't as...
