No more CDMA

I heard that Nokia is pulling out of the CDMA market to focus exclusively on GSM phones. Any truth to this? the reason being the internal antennas don't get as good of reception with CDMA as they do on GSM networks. Also, i read somewhere on the web that something like 82% of the worlds population is GSM so the CDMA market isn't profitable enough to continue making handsets for.

That sucks because Nokia IS the best, but i refuse to go back to a GSM company. Verizon needs to go after this phone.

I don't think it has to do so much with profitability as it does focus. CDMA and GSM need different research teams and rescources so if you can focus on one then you can shift your rescources from one to the other. If it wasn't profitable, then we won't have nearly the number of handsets that we currently do through CDMA providers.

Pretty much. There is this and perhaps a few more models that were already under development, but no new CDMA models are being developed by Nokia.

There will be Nokia-branded CDMA phones, but they will not actually be designed and made by Nokia.

... the reason being the internal antennas don't get as good of reception with CDMA as they do on GSM networks.

🤣 No, that's not the reason.

In a nutshell, Nokia decided to take on Qualcomm, and lost.

Nokia's blunder was deciding to skip EV-DO in favor of EV-DV. At the time, it actually made sense. But ...

The Nokia 2365, 2865, 6165, and 6265 are among the most recent Nokia CDMA phones actually designed and made by Nokia.

The current Nokia-branded phones not actually made by Nokia are the 6305, 6215, and 6315.

i'm so sorry...i didn't realize this was old news not worth asking a question about. you seem offended and i apologize. i do however find it odd you took the time to reply to such old news. do you often spend your time scouring this site searching for questions you don't find worthy? you're better than me, i understand that now. just for future reference, comparing a Motorola product to a Nokia product is like comparing a used Dodge Stratus to a 2007 BMW 5-series.

🙄 i appreciate your laughter in my general direction Rich but the reason i mentioned the antenna hypothesis is b/c i work for a CDMA carrier and we carry a 2125i that gets poor reception and my current boss came from VZW and he claims the Nokia's they carried also received poor reception. i'm new to this industry and it seemed to make sense to me...but what do i know?

Sorry! I wasn't trying to be mean with that comment.

There have been other Nokia CDMA models recently that have excellent reception.

Regardless, anything to do with antennas is a relatively tiny issue in the grand scheme of corporate strategy. That's just not the kind of thing that would cause a company like Nokia to abandon CDMA altogether.

Nokia executives have said consistently over the past couple of years that the US is a crucial strategic market and they aim to overtake Motorola as #1 in this country. However, that's hard to do without CDMA, which is why that decision wasn't made lightly. If it had just been about an...

Yes, except for slapping their name on select phones designed and made by companies like Pantech.
