The issue may not be with the battery. You may have damaged the antenna or something to do with the phone receiving and sending signals.
I have had the u740 since Sept/07 and have noticed that when I am in a location that has has a weak signal or no signal, the phone will go into a power search mode. Just the other day I went out of the house with a fully charged phone. I was ice fishing the whole day out in the boonies with no signal. The phone went into power search mode and drained the battery within a few hours. You may not realize your phone is in power search mode if all it takes is you placing it in your pocket to lose the signal.
Just a thought.
