Does the external display show anything when the phone is on, flip is closed and nothing is in-use? Does it show time? Battery level? Signal strength, etc?
Thanks!

It shows all of those things, but you have to push one the external buttons to see it. It stays on for a short time after you close the flip but then it all shuts off until you push a button.

So there is no indication at all that the phone is powered on without pushing a button?

yes, that is correct. be aware also that the battery on this phone is pretty bad. I did not use the phone at all today and it dropped 3 bars between 11AM and now. i don't know if I am going to return it because it is a very good phone, but I hate having to charge it every single night.

In this day and age, that is completely unacceptable. Many people are saying the battery life is very poor. The only helpful tip I have seen is to change the 3G setting to "only when needed"...

I did change that setting so I can only imagine how bad the battery would be if I hadn't. Of course Nokia doesn't have an extended battery for it either. Chances are I will be returning it. Good phone, but not worth the 200.00 unfortunately.

Actually NEgadgetguy is incorrect. The outer srceen can be set to show the time constantly. Go to Configuration-Phone-Cover Display and set Sleep Mode to "Off". Once the outer display goes inactive (gray) the time will still be displayed. One of the features I really enjoy about the phone.

I don't have any real battery issues either. After a day of heavy radio & internet use my phone battery will die around midnight. I charge every day so it's not an issue with me.

Yeah that's all you need on this damn phone. Keeping the time on all the time will make an inexcusablely horrible battery even worse. If you want to know the time, try wearing a watch, they really help lol....

I keep the time display on and Bluetooth on all the time. I surf the web anytime I have 5 minutes to kill. Just don't have any battery problem like you specify.

i agree with rcamacker, i don't have any battery problems at all i went drove with my girlfriend up to Michigan and i cant stand country music so i used my phone at least 4 hours as a music player from st. Louis and also made a few calls to the family on the road and i still had no problem, also since st. Louis is 3G i still don't have any problems with the battery at home i admit i charge the phone every night but i think nokia did just fine with this phone... and if you use a phone that much that you complain it dies in 5 hours of use then you should
1) buy a sonyericson since the w810 has a 8 hour talk time and still 2mp camera
2) buy a second battery
3) charge the phone EVERY night

the external display can also be used to change options on the camera i.e. turn flash on adjust shutter speeds, white balance etc.

you can also read new text messages you recieve. and the phone can be used to look at pictures UP TO 5 megapixels so thats pretty sweet also (i dont mean take pictures i mean to be compressed onto the main display)
