Redception, Reliability and Battery Questions before Purchase

I am about to switch to Cingular and the V3xx phone looks good.
Questions:
1. How good is this phone in making calls especially in areas such as the mountains and deserts?
2. Is the front cover plastic or glass (as mentioned by the dealer)
3. The battery life does not look great as far as talk time is concerned. Does taking it to 2G mode help and if so how much?
4. How reliable is this phone?

I've had the v3xx for 2 months now, and am happy with it.
I haven't been to mountains or deserts yet, but it does get reception in areas my old phone didn't.
I can't tell about the front cover, it looks more like glass than plastic though. The body itself is metal.
I wondered about battery life too, and yes, 3g will use more than 2g, but I discovered that but knocking the screen brightness down a notch or two, GREATLY increases life. I don't even notice it, because the screen is extra bright to begin with.
Reliable? Can you really tell till you've had it for a long time? So far, for me, no problems.
