Does Verizon require that i data plan be used with this phone? You have no other option if you are buying online, but if you do it over the phone will they let you get away with only a normal calling plan? I have Wifi access 95% of the time, and don't really want to pay for a data plan i will hardly ever use.

I asked a VZW customer service person today if it is, and they told me no. I'm interested in the same thing you are, since I usually have access.

Well, I haven't yet activated this phone yet, but it found my wi-fi network at home, and I put the correct #'s in and was able to surf the net just fine. So I'm thinking yes, you can certainly do without the data plan. Not sure how pix and text messages work with that (maybe pay as you go?) and I guess you could always email people instead when you have wi-fi service...

Well, i assumed that the phone would function without the data plan, but the question specifically was whether verizon would let you use it without a data plan, and use only a standard voice/messaging plan. What service plan did you sign up for when you purchased the phone? Let us know what the story is once you have activated it.

You can use the phone without the data plan. VZW cust car will tell you that you cannot have a advanced device without a data plan. Not true. Here is a direct quote from the VZW Brochure.
"IMPORTANT: Data access is always available on PDA/smartphone devices. If you do not subscribe to either a data plan or a data feature, data usage will be billed as 1.5 cents per KB($15.36 per MB), which does not include Wireless Sync. Wireless Sync may be purchased seperatly for a $5 monthly access fee. A Data Plan or Data Feature is always required on a Blackberry device."
I ordered this phone on Friday and had it delivered on Sat. I only use Wi-Fi. I actually went in and had National Access blocked on my account so that I don't actually use...

Cool. Does that in any way effect picture and video messaging? i heard verizon recently changed their policy regarding MMS and SMS data usage...and i'm not quite sure where it stands now. What about firmware/software updates? will software updates released by verizon be available over wifi?

So what's the deal Tdrussell? Is it required to have the data plan? Will VZW reps activate the phone for you if you already have a basic cell phone plan? Please help me out and let me know because I am planning to switch to this phone as well. Thank you.

With my experience I have to keep the national access pay as you go active to send pix and flix. I have not been charged for any related usage, but some how my phone picked up 1.58Kb of usage in a month. So I personally believe its safe as long as you have the messaging plan to go with it.

I've just done a bunch of reading up on this on howardforums. Apparently a lot of people are asking about this. Call us cheapskates, or just logical...$45 a month for unlimited data on top of what we're already paying is a lot.
From what I gather, the best option is to select the pay-as-you-go service which is required, and the same price as your typical plan.
For example, I have the 1400 min family plan. From what I understand, it would turn into the same plan and price, but with the PAYG data plan added.
Then, you call Verizon and tell them to block all data to the phone. If you don't, you'll be charged the exorbitant price of $15+ per meg. Smartphones and PDAs automatically try to update and check, so you need to call in to V...

yes, thank you, that was helpful, as was the howardforum thread.
I'm still on the fence a bit though, it wouldn't like not being able to recieve MMS and software updates...hmmm

My guess, as a former retail sales rep, is that you HAVE to buy a data plan when purchasing online because the $100 online discount is, in disguise, what is know as an "advanced device credit."
As an existing customer, if you log on to My Account and choose to upgrade (which I have done), you can either buy the phone at normal price, or with the $100 discount if you choose to add on a data plan... but there is NO "online discount" anywhere in the upgrade price. And no, VZW has never offered phones cheaper for new users than existing.
HERE'S MY WARNING: I would be willing to bet that whether or not you told them to disable national access on your account, you will still get billed the additional cost of having data until you completel...

PDA phones require a data feature to be activated. that could be unlimited data for $45, 10MB for $25, or the pay-as-you-go data service which is a free feature as described above. Blackberry's don't have a pay-as-you-go option by the way. Once the phone is activated the pay-as-you-go feature can be removed and a data block put in it's place. i know text can be used with the data block in place but i believe josiah was correct in saying that mms would be disrupted. as for the software updates, some of these are done through external sites so wifi should work fine. the get applications feature won't work with the data block on, but you should be able to surf directly to the site and download from there.

Thanks for the clarification
