Wait. Do I understand this right? If you currently have a contract, you can't buy this phone at full retail but if you don't have a contract you CAN buy this phone at full retail? There must be some logic in what you are saying but I am totally missing it.

if you already have a contract and buy the phone at the store, the rep makes nothing on commission. that is why the want to sell it to new customers,or new activations, they get commission, they get closer to quota and it does not take from inventory for potential new customers. so its not that they wont sell it to you,its just a numbers game the they prefer to win on

Buy it at an Apple store. I heard you pay for it and walk out. Can be activated thru iTines.

I was still in my contract and I walked into an ATT store and walked out with an iPhone, no questions asked. if they refuse to sell it to you, I would certainly just go to an Apple store, at least they know how to treat customers. or just lie, give them a fake name, and phone number and activate it at home..
something like 50% of the iphones they have sold so far were to existing customers.. I call shenanigans on that store..
