Hi,

I might get this phone, but I would like to find outmore about the GPA capabilities. I do not want to pay $10 a month for GPS, and i do not want to pay for a data plan. Do I have any options in terms of buying or using GPS without paying the $10 monthly fee and without paying for ATT's wireless data network? Thanks.

Telenav, Google Maps, and MSN Live Search all use the data network to download maps as you need them so none of those will work for you.

TomTom Navigator, however, looks like it might be a stand-alone (meaning one-time purchase and install) GPS application. You'd have to either contact TomTom directly or find someone who has the application to be sure.

The problem is that mobile devices like the Tilt just don't have that much storage available, and good GPS software requires a fairly large map database to be useful.

Thanks for your help...

How exactly can I tell if the software can work independently from the internet?... I tried calling one company and they said to call ATT. ATT just said that I would NEED a data plan no matter what. The Garmin seems like it can work without the internet and only use the internet to access live traffic.

Does anyone know if TomTom or Garmin softwaer work independently from the internet. If so, is either better than the other. Will they give the quickest route? How do live traffic rerouts work - would I need the internet for that?

Sorry for all the questions... I really appreciate it.

Are any of the programs that work WITHOUT an ATT data plan able to generate directions by fastest time and/or by shortest distance? If so... which? Thanks.

That's just a customer service person playing dumb. The company that produces the software should be able to tell you whether or not you need a live internet connection to use the software... if they can't then they're incompetent.

Of course AT&T is going to tell you that you need a data plan... they want your $40/month.

You need to call back whoever it was you called the first time and make sure that they understand your question. You need to know whether or not the application can function without an internet connection. Don't refer to a data plan at all - that's prob...

You can use TomTom (and there is another one that people talk about, something like Navteq, can't remember) on the TILT without a dataplan. It is very good, and does all the things you asked. This is how I use it. You will have to buy from TomTom though. It is a one time cost though.

The reason it works is because it comes with the maps preloaded on a memory stick so you don't have to use data to access maps.

The only things that require a dataplan are access to traffic and weather info. Otherwise TomTom does everything without the data plan.

I use odyssey mobile 4.0 which works GREAT! It gives you voice navigation/turn by turn. and works without subscribing to ATT internet. I have not tried any other GPS program!

Initally to find get started it takes up to a min. My settings are on com 7 auto detect. I bought the program 2 years ago for 8525.

The only problems I have is that I have to sync my phone up to the computer
