The person at the store was not entirely correct, but for most people it is true that you'll need the $40/month internet plan to make full use of the Tilt.
If you are very careful with your use of email and web surfing, then you probably don't need the unlimited plan. The store rep will try to tell you that you do, but you don't.

There *are* GPS programs that are entirely installed on your device, but you'll have to make sure you pick the right now. Google Maps uses the internet and you'd spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars in per-kilobyte charges if you did not have the $40/month unlimited internet plan while using it.
